A Hungarian - American magician and escapologist, stunt performer, actor and film producer, Harry Houdini was the most influential magician of the 20th century.
His specialty was escapes: slipping out of ropes, chains and hand-cuffs, while locked in trunks and milk cans, or submerged underwater.
His skills and showmanship made the name "Houdini" synonymous with entertaining magic, and is often credited with influencing later magicians.
He made a name for himself as a skeptic who set out to expose frauds purporting to demonstrate supernatural phenomena.
He died in 1926, reportedly due to peritonitis after his appendix ruptured, the legend that he died during a failed escape is untrue.
A collection of magic icons wouldn't be complete without Houdini.
